The first automobiles, in one form or another, started showing up in the early 1800s. By 1902, a design that seated the driver outside the passenger compartment was documented in advertisements. The word “limousine” is thought to refer to the French region of Limousin, as the chauffer/driver would often wear a cloak resembling those worn by shepherds in the region.
